Hi everyone,
Me(31m) and my girlfriend(31f) got into an argument this morning about me being homophobic around this show. The show features a scene where men engage in gay activities and it could be considered surprising as it isn’t revealed that one of the characters swings that way. I was shocked by the nature of the scene where a guy gets a handy from another guy.
This morning I said “1899 had a random gay scene that felt out of place, it didn’t seem to tie into the plot” my partner argued points as to why it was part of the plot. Fair.
Then she said “ if it was a guy and a girl you wouldn’t have cared, if it was a woman and a woman you wouldn’t have cared”
For me that was a little unfair “guess I’m just homophobic then” I said sarcastically. Then she said nothing. The silence made me eat my words. I’m a homophobe now.
Later I said “can we talk” and she sighed and said yes. I said what she said was hurtful. She said “you said these gay characters have no reason to exist on this show and that’s wrong.” To that i said, I didn’t say that. She goes in to “let’s not play he said she said” and starts ramping up. She goes into a full lecture about how I would enjoy it if it were women but men is uncomfortable because I was raised by homophobic parents.
I just wanted to say please give me the benefit of the doubt, I was really talking about how it didn’t make sense with the plot. But I could t get a word in edge wise. Next thing I know we are screaming at each other and she leaves for work.
So AITA for what I said?
Tl;dr I said the gay scene in 1899 felt out of place and didn’t make much sense with the plot. My partner called me homophobic and said I’d like it if it were girls. I said it’s not how I feel, she insists it is. AITA?
