AITA for going off at my husband for buying our son a fight stick?

Me [28F] and my husband [29M] have a son [11M] who has MASSIVELY gotten into fighting games recently, mostly due to our influence I believe. Both of us are massive nerds, we play a lot of video games and right now we’re into the Guilty Gear series. We’d previously funded our nerdy behaviours thanks to my husbands job, which pays very handsomely. Unfortunately, times have been somewhat tough recently since he got let go in a series of layoffs. Our son initially tried playing with a controller, but he said he didn’t like it because he wanted to play fighting games like in an arcade. So my husband suggested we get him a fight stick, to which I agreed that we’d get it for him for his birthday, since we couldn’t quite afford it at the time. We agreed and I thought that’d be the end of it.

Come a week later, my son runs up to me and throws his arms around me, screaming ‘thank you’ over and over. I asked what for, and he said that we got him a fight stick. I was confused, until he showed me the 190 dollar fight stick his father bought him. I said ‘you’re welcome’ and left to talk to my husband.

He initially apologised, stating that he wanted to give him his surprise a bit early (his birthday is in a month), but I went off on a tirade at him for going behind my back to buy it, especially considering we’re only making about 800 dollars a week for our household, because of my shitty job. I will admit, I said some cruel things, but we had to significantly cut into our savings to care for my mother in her final days, so the money I was making was all we really had.

When I was done yelling at him, he looked heartbroken, just saying that he wanted to do something nice for our son before he went into another room.

On one hand, I’m furious that he didn’t consult me first about it. On the other, I feel horrible for some of the things I said.

Before anything else, I’m not going to divorce him or reconsider my relationship thanks to this. This is a one time occurance, and I love my husband with all my heart.

AITA?
