Just for context, this was a while ago, it was around thanksgiving of last year when this story occurred. So this post is more reflective than anything. This is an obvious throw away as my parents know about my Reddit account.
I was staying at my (20F) parents' (mid-40s) house and I was sleeping over for the day before and the two days following Thanksgiving. On the night that I arrived, I made myself comfortable in my old room, which had not changed much since I moved out. There is a single bed and a desk in the room, it's not much, but It reminds me of home and safety. My aunt and her two kids (around 10) were also staying over for the night. It was around 10 pm when my family was watching Christmas movies in the living room (family tradition).
I went up to my room and decided I would hit my thc pen (im in a legal state and have a med card) I got quite high by around 10:20pm and out of nowhere I heard the fire detector going off in the kitchen. I thought little of it, and left out my (first-story) bedroom window to stand outside and get away from the noise. Unbeknownst to me there was really a fire that had started in the kitchen and I was unable to hear my little cousins banging on my bedroom door. They were uninjured by the fire but it had scorched about 1/3rd of our house by the time I walked to the front of the house to see my family distraught thinking I was locked in the burning building. I was also informed that my aunt had to run back into the house to grab her kids and get them away from my door. Personally, I did not and do not understand their concern as I would not die in something so simple as a fire, and believe that my aunt should have had more control over her kids in a potentially life-threatening situation.
AITA?
